GW2 Ranger Build:

Weapons:

Primary: Short Bow

Secondary: Axe and Warhorn

The short bow will be your main source of single target damage and survivability, as it out scales nearly every other weapon in that capacity. Always try to attack your enemy from the back or sides to trigger the bleed effects and maximize your damage. Use your Axe and Warhorn for events and multiple enemies due to the axe’s Ricochet skill, and also when running or traveling for the movement speed boon from Call of the Wild.

Healing & Utilities:

Troll Unguent is by far the most superior healing ability for solo play, due to the large amount of healing and short cooldown. The only exception to this is during underwater combat, where the regen effect doesn’t work at all.

You can easily adapt your utilities to suit certain combat situations, but in general the most effective setup will be:

Spike Trap – a great early survival and AOE damage tool that only gets more useful as you level.

Signet of the Hunt – a passive too good to pass up, this will increase your travel speed and consequently your leveling speed. You can use Sharpening Stone or Sick ‘Em if needed until you unlock this signet.

Signet of the Wild or Quickening Zephyr – The signet is fantastic for solo play, as it applies to both you and your pet giving you almost unrivaled survivability. Quickening Zephyr boosts your attack speed for 4 seconds which amounts to a massive damage increase if you prefer a damage based ability.

Rampage as One – a solid elite skill for all situations. Replace with a racial ability if you prefer.

Traits:

Skirmishing – the first tree you’ll want to fill out. Increased critical chance and damage and slot skills to increase your damage even more. You can switch the third slot for Quick Draw if you aren’t worried about your pet’s survivability.

Marksmanship – the second tree to fill out. Increases power and condition duration. Piercing Arrows effectively gives your short bow AOE attacks so long as your enemies are in line.

Wilderness Survival – the final tree you will fill out. This offers you a bit more survivability. You can swap out the slot skill for Soften the Fall if you find yourself exploring high places or taking “shortcuts” off cliffs often.
